About the artwork

Guardians of Heritage is inspired by the Eyo masquerade, an important cultural symbol associated with Lagos and Yoruba heritage. The work explores the idea of tradition as something that is carried from one generation to another. The faceless, veiled figures create a sense of mystery and anonymity, shifting attention away from individual personalities and toward the collective identity represented by the masquerade. Their presence suggests that cultural traditions can become larger than the individuals who practice them.
